Cougar creek burn
« on: September 28, 2019, 12:04:26 AM »
I hunted this area 3 full days last week and didn’t see A deer! What’s everyone’s take on hunting a recent burn area? There was lots of new growth to feed on but maybe not thick enough for them to feel safe in the daylight? We hunted as if they traveled from unburnt thick reprod forest to the recent burn the evenings and leaving the burn area and more open areas in morning back to the thicker stuff. Saw lots of fresh tracks and hunted those intersections. We camped in the same area and were strictly traveling on foot, elevation was 5,500 abouts. Still looking for my first deer in year 4 of archery hunting! It was the chiwawa unit. Any takes on burn area hunting and hunting the chiwawa unit? Saw some moose tracks and poo I do believe. No bear or cougar signs.

No clue about your specific spot.  Sounds like there's plenty of food.  It also sound like there's not enough cover to keep them out in the open when bedded.  Glass closer to cove and edges.

Plan on deer eating every 4 - 6 hours or so.   They often seem to do it all in unison, like they have some alarm clock that get's them up out of their beds and feeding.  They will still be hard to see even if they are up and eating.
