West Klickitat Late Archery. Unit 578
« on: October 01, 2019, 08:37:31 PM »
Drew the West Klickitat Late Archery Buck tag Nov 27-Dec2. have never hunted the unit, been looking at maps and marking some spots on On X Hunt. Sent an email to the region bio but have not heard back as of yet. Will be heading over after rifle season to look around and check out some of the areas I have marked. A couple questions for those who have some experience in the unit for this hunt.Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. I would expect this hunt to be a migration dependent hunt, is this the case? should they be at the tail end of the rut? I see there is a lot of Timber Company land ( SDS Timber, Longview Timber  ) do you need a permit to access this property? Someone already pointed to North of Glenwood as a place to start as there is good access up there.

YOu probably won't hear back from the Bio as we are now officially within the interior boundaries of the Yakama Nation.  You do not need a permit to access open timber lands.  My guess is that we will have lots of snow on the ground by the end of November.  Good luck with your hunt!

I live in the unit. The deer numbers have been in a steady decline due mostly to our large cougar and bear populations. There is some migration from the Rez I have heard but never personally experienced it. Also SDS and other timber lands have been closing a lot of there lands to public use. Maybe check there websites for specific closure details. Good luck. Plan on a more blacktail kinda hunt.

The deer migrate in to this area. Noticeable difference depending on snow up high. Usually you catch the tail end of the rut. Hit and miss. Cover lots of ground when hunting. Use your glasses to cover ground if you have open areas/vantage points. They will be bedded most of the day with some activity middle of the day if its 30-40 degrees and warmer. If you hit a good cold spell they are moving all day. If you find a good trail between bedding and feeding and have the patience to sit still all day gives you good odds. Big open steep hillsides can be productive morning and evening. Timber and brush during the day. Cover ground!
