New bird pup
« on: October 10, 2019, 01:16:58 AM »
Here’s my new lab pup, she’s almost 11 weeks old and I’ve already introduced her to some pheasant wings. I can get her to sit and stay as I throw the wing into the brush, she loves to plow through the brush as she looks for it. I need to teach her to bring it back to me eventually, right now she just wants to chew it up and eat it. Obviously I want to be sure to praise her for finding it but at the same time I want her to know it’s not okay to eat it. Should I not be too worried about that right now? Eventually maybe next fall I'd like to get her out to the pheasant release. But this is all new to me, any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Great looking pup. Take her hunting and you’re going to have a great dog.
Lead em if they're running.

Proper use of a check chord or choked up long line can help get her turned around and headed back with constant praise...just my  :twocents:

Fantastic looking dog by the way  Have fun, they grow up fast...hunting with a dog is 90% of the fun for me.

Yup.
And then walk the cord toward the pup if necessary.
Once told to come the distance between the 2 of you should always decrease.

The most important thing right now are the basics.  Teach sit, here, and heel now, and the rest will be a lot easier.   8)
Hunt hard and shoot straight!

Do not let her eat the bird or wing.
