Elk with eyeguards

Looking at a bull posted on here, and having pictures of another, both with eyeguards pointing up above their brow tines. How often does that happen? I have only ever seen it the 2 times.

I’m assuming you’re talking about the devils points growing straight up off the brow close to the main beam. Some areas have a fairly strong genetic for this. Maybe 10% of the bulls or so.

Seems like some herds get it more. I know a lot of the bigger bulls that come off mount hood area have them. They are pretty neat.

That unicorn bull thread has them. Never picked up a shed that had any, would be pretty cool to find

Ditto.
I have hundreds of bulls on T cam over the years and this is the first one I ever saw this on. Do they ever get much taller? That would be cool!

2” to 3” is the longest I’ve seen. It definitely varies from area to area that I’ve seen whether it’s a predominant genetic or fairly rare. Even in areas they’re somewhat common it seems like they don’t show up until the bulls are fairly mature.
