Palouse Late Season Tag
« on: October 24, 2019, 10:23:57 AM »
Wife has the tag, we have done our due diligence with some scouting and gained private property access as well ( this was tuff as the majority never responded back!).....But would you hunt North or south of I90? Above the river breaks or out in the farm/flat lands? We have seen about the same amount and size of bucks in all the places but of course haven't been there during the rut. Tips, suggestions and input are welcomed posted or PM'd. Thanks!

I would err on the side of any property or landscape with more timber, hawthorn, or tall shrubs like snowberry and ninebark. This cover allows more escapement to older age classes, and gives bucks confidence to move around during daylight hours. It also gives you more cover as you rattle and grunt.

They will be on long walks/runs a month from now, patience is a virtue.  Pay attention to those does, they often foil the best laid plan.

This is the same problem we had with the hunting by written permission properties.  We hit the Palouse 3 different times to get access over the summer with no luck at all.  I don't know how many property  owners we called, but I only had one guy answer and say no he had the same groups coming back that hunt there every year and one guy called me back last week and said he was not allowing access this year because the deer numbers are down. Knocking on doors didn't get us any access either. We also tried to get reservations for opening weekend but struck out on all of the hunting by reservation land. Our plan right now is to hit the little pockets of state land and feel free to hunt, just trying to put meat in the freezer. Best of luck to you and hopefully your wife is successful!

Had the tag two years ago, shot a nice little 4x4 four days into the hunt. That was the first buck I saw, but the weather for the first part of the season was really warm, as in 50 or above. The day I shot that buck it dropped to 30ish and foggy.

While I was packing him out on the quad, there was a big 5x5 with his nose up a does butt 15 yards off the road.

Watch for big changes in barometric pressure, snow, right after wind storms and they'll be moving. Also try rattling. There are some really good threads on here specifically for blacktail, but I used the same basic methods and shot that buck at 40 yards. I was still hunting heavy timber between a river bottom and ag field above.

Yep ^^^ I’ve drawn this tag 4 times with 100% success. If you can get access to the ground it’s nearly impossible to not kill one.

I killed 3 of these deer on the 16th and one on the 18th.    Like huntnnw said, the end is best  (16-19th) and the beyond the 20th gets even better.   The further north you go, the bigger the deer (on average) if you are looking for that?

Nice bucks JJ. I'm meat hunting at this point and then jumping the border to Idaho. I going to try and reserve some land this week for the last week of the hunt, so here's hoping I can get some access to private land and maybe hold out for a little nicer buck.

Sound advice from you all thanks! JJ nice bucks there, I love big whitetails.....What can be done about landowners not responding or giving permission, probably nothing? Cem3434 I'll keep in touch when we head over and let you know where I see any.....

You should do well with 11000 acres the last 3 days of the season. Good luck and let us know how you do.
