First AR advice
« on: October 26, 2019, 11:38:46 AM »
I know this question has been asked 1000 times on here and every other gun forum online, but I'm doing it anyway.

I've been wanting to pick up another AK for a while now and have heard great things about Palmetto State Armory's GF3, PSAK-47 rifles. I was planning to get one, more or less set up how I wanted it, and that runs just under $700 (without optic).

Then I ran across this deal and It's really tempting me.

https://palmettostatearmory.com/psak-47-gf3-classic-polymer-rifle-psa-16-ar-15-classic-rifle-set-with-matching-serial-numbers.html

I know that it will require me to put a few hundred more dollars into switching out the AK furniture and putting on a front vert grip and picantinny rails, but doing it a al carte is part of the fun. I've got a pretty good idea already of what I want the AK to grow up to be.

My question is what I should do with the AR. They have never really appealed to me before, but for this price, I'm tempted to give it a shot. This cannot be converted to .308, correct? Is a 16" barrel carbine worth putting a scope on? Could this be configured as a yote gun, or would it need a longer, heavier barrel?

What would you do with a bare-bones, entry level AR?

I'm confused

You want an AK?  or do you want an AR?   Or are you trying to decide which one you want?

...also decide what you want to do with it. You mentioned yotes. Is that going to be the primary use and a lot of that or will plinking and home defense be the primary uses? If you want tighter accuracy at longer ranges, order a barrel for that. If your plinking is going to be 100 yards or less, a standard AR15 will be fine and the 16" barrel will be much more maneuverable for home defense. Instead of a scope, think about a holographic or other optic that makes you acquire your target more quickly. Had I the money to get one, I'd be looking at Eotech. .308 is normally an AR10, as far as I know. Of course, I know a ton less about ARs than about 90% of the people on this forum, so the advice is worth what you paid for it.

PSA is not known for making quality AK's. Also their AR's are barely a step up from Anderson. My suggestion to you is decide what the purpose is for the firearm and then we can lead you to the promise Land.

I want another AK and have pretty much decided to go with Palmetto State. But they have a package deal for a AR15 and an AK. So I'm trying to decide, if I went that way and got both, what I would do with the AR.

PSA is not known for making quality AK's. Also their AR's are barely a step up from Anderson. My suggestion to you is decide what the purpose is for the firearm and then we can lead you to the promise Land.

Who makes a better AK? Its a cobbled together amalgamation of plywood and sheet metal. And they gobble up cheap and dirty steel case ammo. You can bury them in a salt-water marsh for a week and then shoot 1000 rounds out of them. They just work. That's the whole reason that I like them.

Now a lot of the kit rifles are made from sub-standard parts, which is why I don't even consider anything from Century, but the GF3 is made from new, hammer forged parts and should last 100 years after the Apocalypse. What more could you ask for in an AK?

Well there is rifle dynamics, and arsenal.

But if you want stuff throw together to just bury it then I guess PSA is fine.

If you want the AR and AK to just say you have one then I guess match the serials to ease the accounting side of your collection.

If you want a purpose driven firearm then we can help
