Hunter asking about certain gmus
« on: November 06, 2019, 08:37:16 AM »
Still getting to know the mountains around here as I'm orginally a hunter from the Oregon coast. For years I stopped hunting til a buddy encouraged me to get back in the woods. So I'm asking around if certain gmus are better than others I live on  the westside of the mountains.
I've been heading towards Capitol forest lots of sign and Jupiter Mountain where I ran into a doe early in the season issue both places can get crowded.
I know I been eyeing some property via Onx maps near capital forest owned by Port Blakey tree farms I've been in contact with them but wanted your opinion on the properties they allow hunting on near there.

If you’re finding sign, hunt there.
If you gain access in an area you think will produce, hunt there.
If you’re interested in learning harvest rates per GMU head over to the WDFW website

The short answer is every Western WA unit can produce, and does produce. Some have more public land than others and since you have OnX, you can ID that ground. There is really no way to escape people here. It's just part of the landscape. You're hunting in the most densely populated area of the state, so it goes without saying you will have competition. The only way to get away from them is to go deeper, darker, further. However, that isn't necessarily necessary to kill animals. I would suggest finding gated roads with 2-8 year old clear cuts that are a mile or 2 back and live in those, and the timber immediately surrounding them. Being as you've already found sign in areas, I would definitely be going back to those areas.

If you want to delve more into harvest stats and best GMU's, etc... here is the link the harvest stats for Washington State. Break it down by GMU's, and have a map handy to compare.
