A comment posted in the "Summary of Written Public Input" on the WDFW site:

Quote
I would like to express my opposition to the earlier
date for controlled hunt applications. I am a non
resident hunter from Oregon. I generally base my
decision on whether or not to apply for controlled
hunts (which requires a purchase of a tag) in
Washington based on my Oregon drawing results.
The earlier date will not allow me to get my Oregon
results before the Washington applications are due.
This will probably cause me to not hunt in
Washington at all. I am probably not unique to this
scenario. You stand to lose some revenue with
nonresident tag sales.

WDFW response:

Quote
The Department currently does not sell many nonresident
tags and has not tried to aggressively market
opportunities for out of state hunters. Many permit
applicants have asked that we conduct our drawings
earlier, so we are accommodating that request.

I have the same feeling as the oregon hunter only in reverse. I hoped for an earlier regulation and drawing so I would have time to put in for other states if hunts in washington did;nt fit my schedule.  It;s hard to wait a year so it must be the time that makes everyone anxious.

As an Oregon resident who has hunted in Washington for the last 8 years (and was a Washington resident who hunted there for the 20 years prior to that), I gave my input both online and in the public meeting held in Vancouver that I would have liked the Washington regulations printed as early as possible.

Is there the potential for conflict if one is drawn in multiple states with conflicting seasons? Certainly  :)

Would that be a GREAT problem to have? Absolutely  :P

For those who may not be aware, in Oregon you do not have to pick up a controlled tag that you are drawn for; if for some reason a conflict were to exist, options do exist.

When I draw my moose tag in Washington I likely won't care much about what I have drawn in Oregon that year.  :IBCOOL:

And personally, its quite enjoyable to be planning my Oregon hunts already because the Oregon synopsis has been out since November; the fact that actual tag allocations won't be known until early May doesn't matter much because trends of tag allocations give the hunter an idea of what is likely to be available.

I wish Washington would do the same thing.

I also like the later date. My complaint is that it shouldn't take 6 weeks to come up with the results. With the computer it shouldn't take more than 2 days.

The earlier the better!!!!!! Why not give the people a little more time to plan there hunt, I personaly give my guys whatever time off they need to go. There are a lot of bosses that are not like me. I also think we should not have to pick are weapon before we put in for tags. I may want a rifle Bull tag, not get drawn and would rather hunt with my bow. This is the same way other states do the drawings.

It still doesn't help me...my vacation requests are due at the beginning of January. Besides, I'm not so sad that fewer out of staters will be putting in. The entire time I was a resident of Arizona I only drew one cow elk tag and javelina every spring. I never drew a single deer, turkey, bear or pheasant tag. Competition with out of staters was huge.
