Toutle youth cow tag
« on: November 19, 2019, 09:18:16 AM »
Trying to put together a last min couple of days to try and fill a cow tag.  Took my son 9 points in youth category to draw his first permits ever.  8 years of not selected.  Then draws 3 tags this year.  So with time and school, sports, money ect.  We chose 2 of the hunts.  And decided the cow tag would be last option.  Planned on not going.   But cleared up a few days and going to see what happens.  Did not get key for wherehauser so going to try to do the state land deal.  So if anyone out there has any suggestions or directions to point us we are all ears.  Not a big fan of last minute deals like this but will take any day we can get to chase elk around.

In my experience in Toutle, you can drive some roads and see some elk. Find old growth timber, get out of the truck and get deep enough in that you’re out of sight of the road. You will probably start finding elk.

I have found herds in lots of spots that you would access from 503 headed to Cougar.

Don't forget there is state land in the southern part of the unit too...lots of elk down there and very little pressure compared to those hauling ass up to the 3000 line to go 4x4'ing....

This hunt used to be a gimme easy one-day affair.  Now not so much.  You aren't missing anything by not having the Weyerhaeuser permit.  I agree with previous.  Look for public land closer to Mountain on south side.

Spent quite a bit of time in this unit for late buck.  Without the Weyco permit its going to be a little rougher.  Didn't see a whole lot of activity but they are still in there.  Mostly hanging out on the edges and with the weather they were only moving early morning, not much before dark though. Hopefully the colder temps will get them up and moving for you.
