Another day at the pond
« on: April 05, 2009, 04:57:50 PM »
My boys really had a blast at the local fishing ponds yesterday so we hit it again today. Glad we did too because they really hit them hard and my youngest managed to land his biggest 'bow ever! Sure is great to be able to get out with the youngsters and enjoy a weekend without rain, snow, or wind!

(Yes, they are just stocked fish but my boys couldn't care less)

Yea Jack, it's Evan's pond. The kids love it there and it was a great way to spend the weekend.

Hmmm....may have to take that road trip down to the Tucannon. I have a couple more days of leave left to burn and might as well do it now.

We were debating between Evans pond and Beaver/Watson ponds (I grew up in Pomeroy and my dad still lives there) and decided to hit the Tucannon.  I thought they would be really fished out at the end of spring break but we (dad, son, nephew and I) pulled out 13 in the last hour or so of daylight.  Purple floating powerbait was what they were hitting.  Sometimes we had all four lines with fish on at the same time.  I do think the scenery of the tucannon is more appealing this time of year (snow up higher, roaring river, turkeys up and down the valley, deer, etc) and worth the drive if/when you get a chance.

We had our pond stocked with kamloops about 7 or 8 years ago, but they don't seem to winter very well in a pond that gets most of its water from irrigation.  We fed them dog food and the ones that did survive grew to about 8 or 9 pounds.  I mean the things were like steelhead.  It was always great to see the excitement on the faces of little kids when they came over and fished.  They had such a blast.  Great way to get kids involved in the outdoors.
