Thompson Renegade front sight question
« on: February 24, 2020, 08:19:36 AM »
I just picked up a Thompson Renegade the other day. It appears to be brand new. The front sight left a little to be desired so I fount a Thompson #7748 fiber optic sight to replace it. These were made for the Renegade and Hawken. The problem is I don't know which way the new sight should be facing. One end has horizontal grooves and the other is smooth. Before I go doing anything I thought I'd see if anyone had any insight. Thank you.

I believe the grooves go towards you (the shooter) to prevent glare.

Yep grooves towards you. Does your rifle have the tang drilled for a peep sight? A peep sight set up with your fiber front sight makes for a stellar shooting combo. Williams and Lyman make a peep for the Renegade. Nice wood grain in your stock

I kind of figured that the grooves served a purpose but needed to confirm so thank you to all. I got pretty lucky with this gun. Bought it on Gunbroker for $250 and I don't believe it was ever fired/used. Super nice stock. Here's another picture. Almost hate to hunt it but that's what it was made for. Shoots round balls great. I need to play around with other options. I also have been loading it with Blackhorn 209 without issue. Talked with TC first and they ok'd it.

Now that is odd.... BH will not reliably ignite with a percussion cap.  It takes a 209 primer to get reliable ignition. That is what the 209 is for in the title BH-209.

Good luck!

I should have mentioned that I got a 209 adapter for the renegade. I works good but you  have to clean the powder residue occasionally or the primers begin to stick. Also I would add that putting a new primer in is not as quick as it used to be.

coming from PA, I have a .54 Thomp. Renegade flintlock. In PA you have to use flint as well as patched ball. Before I moved west the Flintlock season in PA were the day after XMAS through January. My sons used the TC Hawkin in .50. We killed a few deer but were always weather sensitive. We used homemade lock covers slathered in snowseal. TC makes a great gun.
