Air rifle for coyotes?
«
on:
March 06, 2020, 08:20:03 AM »
I'm curious if anyone on here has experiencing dispatching coyotes with air rifles.
I've spoken to a person before who claimed to have taken 20+ coyotes with a .22 and .25 caliber PCP air rifle. He said it takes a well placed head shot but he claimed it was very effective.
I'm considering a Airforce Texan LSS in .45 caliber for coyotes in semi-urban areas. The new model has an integral suppressor(moderator since it's not on a firearm and not regulated) and develops around 500 foot pounds of energy with a .45 cal slug.

A little bit of an old post but want to weigh in here.
A coyote can definitely be taken with an air rifle. It's actually not that difficult to accomplish 100 yard shots with an air rifle. I gifted my friend an PCP air rifle and a month later he was killing varmints at 100 yards.
I'd recommend at least .25.
An Air Force Texan 45 will definitely kill a yote but if you choose differently you can get a repeater that can do the same. Making follow up shots a reality when necessary.
People have taken some pretty big game with air rifles now.. You just need the right tool and the right situation

I’ve been watching the Air Gun Challenge this season. I’m amazed on what they are doing with air guns. Last week they needed to smash down cinder blocks to get to the targets behind. Most took two shots with a 30 caliber to flatten the blocks at 50 yards. I think it would not be problematic taking a yote at 100.

The most important things other than the rifle with a good trigger to shoot long is a nice scope and the right caliber. If you got a 2x4 power scope you aint gonna have enough scope to even hold over. at long ranges So make sure you get a scope to match the job as well as the caliber.

Expert hardly but I do shoot air gun and have close to 10000 pests down this year. Will a .22 PPC airgun do on a coyote definately. But you will need to be under 50 yards and know your distance well. A head shot well placed. Personally I would want 30 yards to get a good shot in. Would prefer slugs rather than pellets. As one increases caliber one could increase range and as one gets into heavy 30 to 45 cal a 100 yard boiler room shot should be good and of coarse the closer the better. The modern airguns are not grandpa's pellet gun. The biggest reason I have been shooting air more and more is the quiet. A modeator, silencer is legal no license required and shooting around animals, buildings is less restrictive. Oh I still use my rim fires and center fires but it does open a whole new world of shooting and for a lot of us shooting in our own back yard keeping the trigger to eye sharp.

With a crossbow you don't have to headshot.
I'm just not seeing it.

Dropped a yote from my back porch with the .177 10 grain pellet 2 weeks ago @ 20 yards. Gotta be a solid brain shot to do but, it's doable.

Yeah 50 cal is going to get the job done. Just don't expect 200 yard shots. Not that I have taken any deer with an air rifle but people have been taking some nice creatures with big bore airguns out to 100-150 for a bit.
The great things about small cal airguns are the lack of noise and lack of gunpowder smell. It's perfect for where I live because I can get a gun with a shrouded barrel to help make it quieter and put on a big silencer. With the right gun and silencer up to 25 cal you'll basically hear the hammer spring and action of the gun more than anything. I value the fact that the neighbors have no clue what is going on.
