Wrapping a Breech Plug

For years now I have been wrapping my Knight breech plugs with Teflon tape versus using any type of grease.  I have always used the normal White plumbers tape to complete the job. And it really has been a good experience for me.

So after wrapping this is what a completed project would look like



Well, this summer when working with technician doing a safety check on a commercial kitchen hood, I noticed that he was using a different Teflon than I had seen before.  I asked him about the tape and it was his feeling it was a stronger tape and tended to seal much better than the normal white Teflon.  With that small bit of information I thought it might be something I would like to try with my muzzleloaders.



So for the last few months I have been using this tape and 'for me' it certainly has proved to be a better sealing possibly stronger tape. The way I do this project the BP is completely cleaned and brushed with a wire brush to remove all foreign materials. Then with the BP inserted in the ratchet and socket I start a wrap around the nose with the tape extending over the nose.  Actually I wrap the nose with two wraps then start down the BP to the ends of the treads.  Cut the tape and then turn the BP in your thumb and forefinger to press the tape down in the threads.  This tightens the tape to the body of the BP.



When the BP is wrapped, cut, and pressure rolled in your fingers the last step is to tap the taped that was extending above the nose down onto the nose.  The two wraps over the nose will most always provide a near positive seal at the nose when the BP is tighten snugly up against the shelf in the breech.



It does take some practice to get the good wrap but once you have mastered it - it becomes very simple.

Looks interesting, First question is where do you get that tape?  Next question is what is the benefit to that vrs regular breach plug grease?  Is it just cleaner and less messy?

It kind of looks like the Teflon tape might create a partial blockage of the hole where the spark has to pass through to ignite to powder. Evidently it hasn’t been a problem for you.
It does seem like it would be less messy than grease.

No it really doesn't. I always pop 2-3 caps or primers to clear the BP and bore of excess materials.  Usually the second cap blows the excess tape out the bore on and on the ground.

In my mind... it is far less messy than grease but it does take some practice to learn to wrap correctly.  When I wrap I always put two wraps around the upper nose of the breech plug then continue with one wrap down the BP. If you look closely at the nose you can see it is more white than the body of the BP

Always wrap the plug with the threads so when you insert it the tape works with the threads...

I ordered it from Amazon, but I guess I gotta thing that Home Depot - Lowes might also carry it.

For myself it is far cleaner - but that is just me

Sabotloader is this new tape thicker or just stronger?

I am going to say this - but I can not prove it.... I really do think it is slightly thicker and definitely stronger! As I pull it around the BP it does not seem to stretch as easier as the white.  I will add it is not as think as pink tape!

I will have to give this a try.  Like the idea of powder not getting stuck in the greased up threads.

I went to tape on Sabotloader's suggestion a couple of years ago.  Night and day difference while cleaning.  I'll never touch another tube of BP grease.  No issues with ignition, stuck plugs, or anything, really.

Thanks for the idea.  Anything to help cleaning and reduce false fires.  I've been having them happen quite a bit lately.  Think I need some new nipples.... but does anyone have any thoughts on the small vs. large nipple option for a Knigh (mk-85)t?  I'm rocking the small right now

I am assuming the small nipple is a #11 nipple.  I use the #11 exclusively because I can make it water proof to the elements.  I would also suggest as the first choice use the RWS Dynamit Noble 1075 caps and second the CCI #11 MAG caps.
