Found a fresh lion track! Edit: wolf spoiled the hunt
« on: March 15, 2020, 12:36:14 PM »
I took my pups for a walk a couple miles from the house and found lion tracks going all over in the fresh snow. There was a really nice track that had to be from yesterday morning and it was skirting the back of a ridge and I knew a road leading around to the top. So we hiked on up there and cut the track again but this time super fresh. No melting or crust to it. I had my dogs and camera and decided to follow the track and see where it went for a evening hunt or tomorrow morning hunt. Ended up losing the track and my dogs decided to run every track in 100 yards so I headed back to make a plan.

Just ordered all the electronic sounds from rainshadow to load onto my caller. Giving up on these other sounds I’ve been using unsuccessfully.

Measured the stride by laying my rifle along the track and marking my barrel- 39-40 inches. So should be a Tom right?

And I’m marking a couple of OnX spots that look great up there. Nice clear cut and rock cliffs.

Pictures are the first tracks I cut, we had snow day before yesterday and then again yesterday morning.

May my presence go unnoticed, may my shot be true, may the blood trail be short.

My pups are an Anatolian and a Great Pyrenees mutt. No hounds or sniffers on them. Just walking em to get exercise and carrying a bunny rifle as I haven’t killed a rabbit this whole year. Nothing illegal so why hide it?

So I hiked back up there and let the area sit for 15 minutes or so. Started with fawn distress and after a few minutes tried the cougar whistle. Sat quiet and tried again. Mid call the unexpected happened. A WOLF STARTED HOWLING FROM THE HILLTOP TO MY LEFT! We’ve got the wolves but so far no ones reported one or even talked about one being within a long ways of the one I found. I’ve got a few videos and you can hear him howling. I ruined my lion hunting and started howling back and got the wolf to come in but he held up in the woods. I definitely didn’t see that coming. I’ve only ever called them in Montana so that’s actually my first Washington wolf I’ve called in.
May my presence go unnoticed, may my shot be true, may the blood trail be short.

Looks like a good cat, hope you can get out after it again.

Very cool howling the wolf in!
