Dogs chasing elk
« on: April 29, 2020, 08:50:07 PM »
Had to go to the store real quick today and on the way back decided to swing by and check out the local elk herd and was amazed at what I saw. Pulling up the elk were all running together and behind them was a black German Shepard along with a brown one. It was a hard thing to watch. The situation was handled but careless owners really piss me off.

Frustrates me beyond belief.  :bfg:  I haven’t seen that out here where I’m at. Surprised I haven’t. I find a stray dog about every month in my field.

Shoot the *censored*s.  This is the type of situation that should have everybody thinking about buying an ar pistol.  Its essentially a rifle, but legally a pistol, so you can keep one loaded in your rig.  Just sayin.

I would agree bango. If I see it I would have to take action. It’s frustrating that the owners of dogs let this happen. Has anyone heard from the DFW on this topic

I took video more as evidence than anything. Some will recognize the field. Next time your in town swing by and make sure it’s not still happening.

Ive heard from wdfw on this topic.  I had local dogs chasing deer on my place.  I lodged a complaint.  Game warden said "it sounds like you should shoot the dogs."  I told him i would if i had to, but i dont want to shoot somebodys dog.  He said if i did, neither the county nor the wdfw would press charges, id be immune to anything other than a potential civil suit, which wouldnt happen if i basically just SSS.  anyway, i got him to talk to the dogs owners on my behalf, and luckily that fixed the problem.  Really, i dont want to kill a dog under any circumstances, but i would have if the warden wasnt able to put the fear into the dogs owners.

Legally the only people that can shoot dogs chasing wildlife are law enforcement officers. The law provides for immunity against civil and criminal action for officers who shoot dogs in this manners, and nobody else.

Joe Citizen shooting a dog chasing a herd of elk is open to civil and/or criminal liability.

Shoot em. Had three large crossbreeds chasing a half dozen deer across my field sometime back. Cracked a couple rounds out of the 270 over their backs first time. They ran off quick. Problem was a week later the same three dogs doing the same thing. Popped two out of the three. No excuse. My dogs are in my control or in their kennel.

Yeah, like the wdfw officer told me, id be open to a civil suit if i was caught, so keep my mouth shut.  But neither the county nor the state would prosecute.  So pretty much what you said.  But even though i know i would have kept my mouth shut, i really dont want to shoot a dog.  It would screw me up, no matter how necessary i knew it was.  So the dfw officer took care of it for me, so i wouldnt be forced to bloody my hands

Years ago I worked with a guy whose dog would chase & harass elk like that. Then one time the dog started getting after a calf & momma stomped it bad. Problem solved.
