East Okanogan Any Whitetail (Modern)
« on: June 25, 2020, 11:09:42 AM »
I drew this tag. I have never been up there, but will be taking a few trips this summer. I have enough experience to know that what I see in July/August will likely not be what I see in November. I am super excited about the opportunity. Hunting in November up there should be a great experience. I am also stoked because I have never hunted whitetail before. I already have a muledeer and blacktail in Washington so this is a great opportunity to complete the deer slam here in my home state.

Anyone willing to offer some advice or information? I would greatly appreciate it.

My plan right now is to focus on the 2nd and 3rd week of the season. That first week I will still be hunting elk.

Regards

Your plan is solid, the second and third weeks are the time to be there. There are some great deer over there, look for alfalfa and crop fields during your scouting trips, as that is where the deer will be come November. The deer there will travel a bit for a good meal. If you get weather a little bait can go a long way to locate any local deer. We generally get hundreds of pics in just a few days with a bit of weather.

Thanks for the replies fellas. Just got back from a couple week vacation in MT with the family.

@Birdguy, thank you and sounds good. From looking at maps, it seems there is a good mix (50/50?) of public and private in that unit. Should be interesting to see what I find when I get my eyes on it.

@Onewhohikes, No, I have never been in the unit before. Will be making a trip soon. I am not looking for anybody's honeyhole. If you are that generous, please just pm me so that we don't blow up somebodies spot for all to see :) haha

@Wingin it, I have no experience with rattling, but I was planning on bringing my grunt tube for sure. What are your thoughts on that?

Getting excited for this tag  :IBCOOL: Anybody else out there have this one?

Hope general deer season has gone well for everyone. I took the boys out and just had a good time looking at deer and enjoying being at deer camp with them.

Good luck to everyone with elk this upcoming week.

So when I drew this tag in the spring, I figured it was by far my best chance to fill the freezer this year. I ended up nailing a spike and black bear during elk season, so the freezer overfloweth  :yike:  It could be a banner year.
