any young turkeys being seen?

Just did the WABDR this week and we saw two groups of hens with young in two separate areas. Not as many as I would have expected. They were looking well tended though. It's really hot in the Cascades right now so hopefully they are keeping cool.

To bring this back up, we ended up losing a lot of the young turkeys. Dunno what happened but they all died off it seems. But now our local flocks all had second broods. About 2-3 dozen baby turkeys running around. Bunch of baby quail too. Dunno how they’ll fare this fall but it’s crazy to see in August.

I'm further east than you and I'm seeing pullet size chicks,  some really late hatches!

Our chick numbers are down, but there are some, mostly 2 to 6 per hen that have chicks, but a lot of hens with no chicks. I haven't seen any tiny late hatches, all are grouse size or larger that I've seen.

I also have seen some late hatch but normally do, so I think often times first hatch struggles to emerge from the cold wet spring, then late hatch struggles to get through the winter.

I saw about the same counts as Dale, 2 to 6 up through the Winthrop area and round about. All of them were feathered out and had good size to them. It sounds like things were a little tougher farther East.

Think they did ok around us, I see one group regularly that is 3 hens and 24 poults. I am seeing some real variety of sizes in the groups though. Some just pheasant size and some nearly full size. Sure seeing a lot of deer with twin fawns also.

I've seen quite a few broods in Chelan Co, mostly smaller broods of 2-6.  Saw a brood of hatchling quail last Saturday.

sounds most reasonable reason, i know cold and wet are tough on the little ones but the food makes sense .. i know when i was out in May, later than typical, i bumped several hens, maybe off nests, didn't go look where they had been as i didn't want to mess up nesting if it were happening..

I hav e been seeing lots of young Turks and lots of jakes. Next years going to be a great year.
