A little story from about 20 years ago. There was a group of us that would do the High Hunt every year.  A rather new hunter went in with his wife's Llamas. One broke loose and was running up and down the trails blowing up everyone else's  stock. This guy was running around all freaked out about how he couldn't go home without the Llama. But he couldn't catch it.
About 20 minutes later this Llama blew threw an Outfitter, his pack string and clients.  The outfitter very calmly pulled out his gun and dropped the Llama in its tracks. He put his gun away and told the young man that he could now take it home to his wife.
It was a very interesting  afternoon up on the mountain.   I have a lot of stories I could tell about Washington High Buck hunts.
The only thing I now tell people is.  Make sure you can put your life into the hands of the people you are with. When you're 20 miles back in you just don't call 911 and sit back and wait.

All of my adventures were in the Glacier Peak Wilderness. I never went into the Pasayten. I was very fortunate my first trip in to go with folks whose families had hunted in it for 40 plus years. We hunted it hard and very successfully for another 10 years.  I will have one more trip in but hopefully many years from now.  That will be to take the ashes of a dear friend to a certain ridge. The same person who first took me.

What do you do with the goats during a hunt? Do you have to pen them in an electrical fence or just let them sit by camp? I was just wondering about the freedom to wonder around looking for animals after getting to your location.

no either they accompany you or you have someone stay behind with them.

Let them hunt alongside you.  No leashes, they naturally will follow behing you and do whataver you do.  When you stop and glass they will either bed or feed within 20' of you.   In most cases they won't spook any game, often its the opposite.  Ive had deer approach my string within 10 yards on 3 sperate occasions (while I was standing right there with them).  I don't know anyone who rents them locally.  Mine have packed about 9 animals out of the WA backcountry in the last two years, some of them in some really nasty places.
