Cheap all wheel drive or 4x4 for daughter suggestions
« on: August 17, 2020, 10:49:49 AM »
so the jeep is running but it's time to part ways.  She'll be in Pullman starting January.  Looking for all wheel drive option.  She has some money to put down and ready for a small payment if necessary.  Anyone here of any deals on new?  Hyundai, Kia or something like that??  Thinking she can afford around 12-15k.  No opposed to used either.

if it were me, I would be looking at a subaru. Reliable in all weather and good gas mileage.

I had an outback in college that was awesome getting me back and forth from Spokane and I also took it bird hunting. My parents have had multiple and they are nice rigs.

I've never known anyone with a Kia who had good luck with it. When I was selling cars (Chrysler) I used my down time to look into alot of the other manufacturers and was blown away by what Hyundai was doing and at their price point. I wouldn't hesitate a moment to go Hyundai if that's what youre thinking

I would look at a Subaru Forester on the used market, especially one with dealer maintenance records, or look for a Toyota RAV4 with similar care records.  Both have good reliability marks, also, although long in the tooth, if you can find an S-10 Blazer, they DO well.  I'm looking for one myself to go with my small fleet of S-10s.  All mine have over 250K and running well (tho I am a maintenance nazi) and one nearing 300K with very few issues (its getting to need a fuel pump...soon at 290K)

Whatta ya mean I can't have one of each?

I see S-10 blazers at surplus government vehicle auctions that look tempting. Plain jane, probably just had some road engineers spilling coffee in them.

That fuel pump at 290k miles, is that the second one or the first one? Mine went out at 95,000 miles, left me stranded.

That one is the second pump, the first was trashed @ 23K by gritty gas in CA , combined with a split filter sock that left me stranded in AZ.  So only 267K on the second pump.

I have 260000 on my 04 Outback and it still purrs like a kitten and no issues besides basic maintenance. It does awesome in the snow and I average about 26mpg. My next car will be another Outback or Forester.

I’d go Subaru also. Owned at least one since I go out of high school, 32 yrs,
usually as the GF / Wife car.
Never an issue with any of them, do the maintenance,
Currently a ‘16 Forrester (bought used for $16k last year with 20000 miles)
And a ‘06 Legacy GT (not good in any more than 4” of snow, great on ice with good tires) that I’ve had since ‘08, had the turbo go bad at 160k 2 years ago, biggest repair ever.
One shot. One kill!

On the Subaru note....we've owned 2, and didn't care for either.  Both brand new off the showroom floor..  1st was a 2009 Tribeca,  drove it up to Olympia the day after we got it, on the way home (thankfully close to home) a transmission solenoid went out and we were stuck in 1st gear.  Warranty covered it, but still a pain, then little things started happening like power window switch going out, moon roof seal leaked, warped brake rotors at 7k miles.  My wife then had to work in Vancouver so we sold that and bought her a 2014 Crosstrek.  It just felt like a cheaply made car, loud road noise, flimsy body etc.  One evening while driving home on I-5 it broke a valve spring and sent a rod through the side of the block leaving her and my 2 girls stranded for a while.  I have relatives with older Subarus that have been great, but I'll never own another one.  We now own a 2016 Highlander that is my wife's car and it's been great (currently 98k miles), and I have a Tundra that has been bullet proof.  I've almost always owned Toyota and have been treated very well by them.  If she's looking small, I'd go Rav4, Highlander or CRV, more offroad style I'd go 4 runner, Tacoma, Tundra.  Just my  :twocents:

I've had excellent luck with the CRV. They have their foibles, but they're sure low maintenance compared to most other things out there. I've got one going onto 270k, with just a few regularly scheduled quirks. AWD system and ABS system are really good, take the thinking out of it kind of good... for kids and etc.

If you want more steel around her, I'd go 4runner, or pilot, or Acura MDX. But I sure can't say anything bad about the CRV.

Subaru are great, and tough, and very good AWD systems, but they don't have the maintenance longevity and resale value.

If mileage is not an issue, any of the Nissans with V6's should be pretty bomb proof.  The first two i had, I put a combined 480k on with no real issues.  My current 2015 Frontier has 71k on it with no issues. All have been 4x'd quite a bit.  The 88 Hardbody towed a fully rigged 18' bass boat all over the state.  It was still running around 10 years after I sold it. 15-16 mpg but I have a heavy foot quite often.  A good bit cheaper than a comparable Toyota.
May that for which I prepare never come to pass.

Ive never ridden in a subaru i liked. Loud road noise, rattle-y engine, my mom's 2017 smokes at startup (50,000 miles, maybe), head gasket issues, obnoxious tire issues (you get a flat on the front, you can't put your spare up there, you have to put a REAR tire on the front, the spare on the rear, and pull the AWD fuse... no thanks!)

My wife had a Toyota Highlander for many years. '06, V6, AWD... it was a little beast. They are a bit thirsty, though, like most toyotas in my experience. We traded it in with under 100,000 miles on a new '18 tacoma sport. had an alternator die on the Highlander, but it was an easy driveway swap. Worked with a fella that LOVES RAV 4s. Had excellent luck with them, too.
