Over/Under for daughter
« on: August 28, 2020, 01:16:56 PM »
I am looking for a solid over and under 20 gauge for my daughter that won't break the bank. I am kind of thinking about the Franchi Catalyst Instinct. Does anyone have experience with one that could give a review? Any other good ones I should be looking at? I'd like to keep it 1500.00 or less but I don't want junk either.

You can buy a very nice Citori used for under 1500 and it would be something she could give to her grandkids.  A Franchi will not hold up.  Lots of locking bolt and firing pin issues with them.  Basically stay away from Turkish shotguns no matter the brand.  They are not built to last.

I'm a total CZ fanboy, and those are way less than 1500. For your budget, if you're careful, you could probably find a Beretta 686

Not sure on your daughters age/size but assuming we are talking youth length.

Below your budget: CZ redhead premier reduced length

Your budget is on the higher side so I’m going to say what’s another $200 and throw out a citori cxs micro  :chuckle:

She is indeed a small framed shooter. Youth/compact length for sure. I've always liked the Brownings but they can be on the heavy side. This will see double duty, the field and sports. The sports side is mainly practice and not competitive.

pay close attention to gun weight.  The Franchi Instincts should be in the 6 poundish range.  I have one in a 28 and it's listed as 6 lbs.  Browning does have several youth models.

If you're not opposed to cutting the stock down, I'd suggest you look for a Beretta blackwing or whitewing. Both are a plainer version of the silver pigeon (same action and light weight). They are no longer offered new in this country but you can find them used for around a grand on gunbroker.

If you end up with a Browning, I have a youth stock with adjustable comb. It came off a Browning 525 model it should fit most 20 gauge frames. If it fits no cutting required. It has a good Kick-ease pad on it as well. Open to trades etc. I shoot 525's in 12 & 20 with tubes for 28 and 410 in competition along with a 425 28.

Those TriStar O/U shotguns are pretty nice! My son and I shot 100 rounds each through a 20ga at a sporting clays course recently. They feel great! Especially for $360! At your local Walmart...unfortunately.
