Clear cuts gmu 651
« on: September 30, 2020, 12:23:19 PM »
So I recently bought a pass for green diamond land. This past weekend I went to gmu 651 satsop which is owned by green diamond and needs a pass. However the couple of gates I hunted the forest was pretty over grown or about 10 years old from being clear cut. I mostly hit the few gates on matlock side in between gmu 633 and 651. I did not check other gates. Does anyone know if there are clear cuts in the area owned by green diamond? Perhaps further in or near another gate. I really didn't do my homework on this. Just wondering for future hunts if there are clear cuts on the land.

You should be able to see on Google earth if there are recent cuts a reasonable distance from the gate.  Looks like imagery from that area is as of 7/21/18.

Tons of clear cuts out there. They get hit hard and often by all the people that bought that pass. Google earth and then go and check it out in person.

Find the clear cuts that you can't drive to/through, and that take some effort to get to. Can't count the number of times I set up an hour or two before dawn on the edge of a promising clear cut, just to have endless trucks slowly rolling through with one person driving and another hanging out the window with a rifle in hand.  I'd disparage them, but those tactics filled more tags than than I did there, so while I took home the pride of a good hunt they went home and ate bacon-wrapped backstrap...  Although truth be told, if you do see a truck, watch about a hundred yards behind it.  Blacktail sometimes spooked at the trucks and moved after the trucks rolled through.

I actually had my best luck there by going on the main road to the north of the property and then looking for the "caution deer crossing" signs and then going 50-100 yards into the woods from there.  Road crews often put those signs where they do for a reason...
