Tikka Rounds

Hey Everyone,

Question regarding specifically, a Tikka T3 in .300 Win.  I have primarily used this gun for Elk and Bear only with Federal Vital Shok (Silver Casing) 180 grain rounds.

Do any of you use the same rounds for Deer (BT for me) as you would Elk?  Or do you drop down smaller?  Wondering if I should look for that 135-150 grain class... But have never shot anything but 180 from this rifle.  Any experience with trajectory/drop/ overall experience etc. Sighting happens at 100. Don't like to go over 250.

If you are happy with what you are running, don't change IMO. A deer will never know the difference.

I would use the same rounds for deer and elk.

Thanks guys! Didn't know if that would be too much ummfff for a BT.  Definitely feel comfortable with how it shoots now. I have the time to practice and get re-dialed, but you all are right..Why change it.

It shall stay then as a 180 flinger' !

No such thing as too much. I’ll be shooting 215’s out of my 300 wsm for everything. Stay with what shoots good for ya.

All things being equal, dropping down to 135's or 150's would likely result in a deer receiving more ummfff than using the 180's you're use to. Unless they were reduced recoil loads to mimic 30-06 or 308 loads, the velocity from that light of bullet in a 300 win mag will cause a lot more damage to a deer than you'd think.

That is exactly right.  Had a friend who for years shot 150s exclusively out of his .300 Win mag.  Many of the deer he took had massive meat damage (mostly blood shot).  We finally convinced him to switch to 180s and it made a huge difference.

I would attribute much of that to bullet design. I shoot 165 grain monolithics (Barnes TTSX) out of a 300 WSM and damage is minimal in most instances.

If it's destined for the dinner table...it gets the all-copper Barnes TTSX monoliths.  With the difference in meat loss and lead grenade issues, it's beyond me why people use anything else (unless a given rifle system simply won't shoot them well).

If it's for anything else...it gets traditional cup and core bullets from Berger or Sierra.

I shoot hornady gmx 165 grn out of my tikka t3x 300 win mag. They shot the best when I first sighted it in. Work great for any western big game animal. Like everyone else has mention, whatever shoots the best out of yours go with it! It’ll work just fine if you hit them in the right spot.
