I’m having trouble with smoke blowing back through my door and stove pipe. I’m using as short of pipe as I can and all air flow is up. I have a 45 with no other bends. I’m using a home made stove that doesn’t seal tight.

If I open the draft enough to stop the smoke the fire gets too hot. I’ve had a few issues with this before, but nothing quite this bad.

The wife is going to spend her first night in the tent next week so I a bit concerned she’ll have a fit with the smoke. I’ll buy a new stove if need be.

Sounds like your pipe goes out through the wall and not straight up.  As wadu1 said, add another section of pipe.  I had the same problem in MT last year, 40 mph winds blowing, we added a second elbow so the last section of pipe was pointing straight up and it solved the problem.

And if possible, a straight section out of the stove before any bend.

No spark arrest or, open ended. Right now it’s a 45, then a half section with dampener, then another section. That was real smokey so I added a 90 the. Another section. This was much better, but still had some issues. When I go back next weekend, I’ll take out the second 90 and just an the other section.

The more vertical rise you can get, the better the draft.

Vent vertically as far/as much as possible and practical and it'll run much better.

In addition to a longer chimney pipe, I would also go to a fireplace shop & get a seal for around the door. I don’t know what it’s called, but it looks kind of like rope. I did this on an old stove I had and it helped a lot.

The issue is not when I open the door. Its mostly when the wind gusts.

Make the pipe outside as high or higher than the peak. Add a cap on top. It fixed my issues.

That’s what I did and it made all the difference. I spent the last 6 days 8n the tent and had no issues. We’ll be headed up next Friday to spend another week in the tent.
