Son's first mule deer buck
« on: November 01, 2020, 09:13:58 AM »
Well my son drew a youth tag for any deer and did the tag justice.   Multiple times throughout the hunt he passed on does, spikes and two points.   He had his heart set on a 3 or 4 point for his first mulie.  Well he accomplished his goal!!

Quick story.   Spotted the deer and followed them into a canyon where the group of 7 deer were headed to get out of the wind.   Lost sight of them for about a half hour before spotting them in the bottom of the canyon.  Made a plan to get to 200 yards.  Executed that plan over the next half hour.....just to find the deer were not where we left them.   Started moving slowly down canyon glassing every nook and cranny.   About 15 minutes later I spot a doe feeding at 300 yards.  We sit down and start picking the brush apart.  Couple minutes in my boy says....there’s multiple deer, THERES THE BUCK!!   Whoa.....calm down!!!!   :chuckle: :chuckle:  I set up the bog bod death grip and get him in a seated position.  I range the buck at 308 yards, dial the scope and we wait.   I can see the shoulders but he is not comfortable with the shot.  He says he wants to wait until he can see the crease in the shoulder.   The deer have no idea we are there.  A couple minutes pass and the buck takes a few steps....now the entire vitals are in view....and apparently the crease too!!!!!! :chuckle:  BOOOM!!  The 300wsm barks with no warning.   :bfg:  the buck hits the ground like a sack of taters.   Buck down!!!  Took off the top half of the heart and both lungs....perfect hit.    Now the work begins.  We ended up about a mile from the truck in the bottom of a steep canyon.  4 hours from time of shot it was at the truck.

I couldn’t be a more proud dad!!   This is his 4th deer in three years. He is quite the marksman and hands down one of the best hunting partners I will ever have.  Backstrap for dinner.....doesn't get much fresher.

His smile says it all.
