Gift Ideas for Young New Hunter
« on: December 18, 2020, 02:27:06 PM »
Hi All,

I would like to buy my niece something useful for Christmas, but on a budget.  She is a new hunter.   I have been watching for affordable quality binos on the secondary market, but haven't been able to pull that together.  Any other ideas?

What species is she mostly hunting?  That may narrow down some of the choices of gear she will need.

Maps, a nice compass, and a book on how to use them.

Any type of call is a good gift.  Most are in the budget.  May spark a new interest and provide an early start to refine the skill. I also think the License/Tag idea is great.

That's what I was going to say.

You can always go with handwarmers, snacks or fun stuff too.  That works if you don't know what they already have.

If ya need something to put all this stuff in  :chuckle: this is a pack you could have for free to give her. Not a pricy hunting pack but it’s brand new and she might dig the camo. I’m in Arlington.

I always give my kids, neices and nephews a Buck 102 woodsman in their 1st year or so.

It fits those small hands and they always light up when they see a cousin with the same knife, it connects them.

Wish I could go back 23 years and have them all engraved.

Reminds me I need to get 2 more!

Thanks for all the input!  This helps a lot.

Especially thanks for the backpack offer.  Very nice of you.  Unfortunately I am 3 hours from Arlington.

The only thing I would add is one of the Outdoor edge swing blade knives. I have given each of our new hunters one because they do the job well year in and year out.

I love my Outdoor edge razor-pro swingblade,  but I do not recommend any exchangeable blade knives for kids.

Jet boil

I dunno how old this niece is, but I can attest that kids LOVE having this experience of lunch on the mountain.

I can't recommend a jetboil though, because the adult would have to be on board of doing this if the niece is young.  If the adult is a pack of jerky, couple granola bars, and ding dongs type they won't take the time to use the jetboil, and the niece won't ever get that experience.   It'll sit and collect dust.

If the niece is young I'd run it by her adult hunting partner and see if they'd use it...if they already have one and use it, then it's kinda redundant until the niece is on their own hunting.

I just had another idea, a gift certificate to mount their first turkey beard on a plaque.

Great to see generous kind people like Bowhunter3 - good on you.
Other ideas: OnX app, binos, GPS devices, bino pack, combo tags for next year, boots ... all of which can be used for other activities too (except for the tags :))
