Cast and Blast?
« on: December 28, 2020, 08:12:46 AM »
My dad is interesting in doing a cast and blast trip in the SE part of the country in 2021. He said that many states have an early season (September) specific to teal and he has always wanted to shoot a blue wing teal. His preference would be to find a lodge that we could stay in as well. He mentioned LA and TX but I am sure any state would do. The cast portion would be redfish and speckled trout.

Anyone on here have any experience/recommendations? Really appreciate it!

Gotta be BWT. My dad lives to duck hunt but has never shot a BWT.

I think this would be doable from Eastern shore of Virginia to Georgia, if you timed it right.  At least in Virginia, early teal overlaps with a real liberal early goose, and also rail (hunted and fished Chesapeake Bay for years). Texas laguna madre would be cool. Or go big and head to the bahamas for blue wings and bonefish.  September can be a brutal hurricane month for the SE, there's that.

Michigan has an early teal season. No hurricanes either. A combo duck hunt and bone fishing trip would be incredible. I'm going to check that out.

We have a good number of blue wing teal in Washington for the first couple weeks of the season. I used to kill a bunch around Yakima.

I appreciate everyone's insight. That said, we (he) is really locked in on the idea of BWT and redfish. Hoping to get some recommendations for specific outfitters not alternative plans.

Lol, you got everything but what you asked for. If I was going after BWT, I would definitely be looking at the route you're going - farther south to get a little later in the season for color. Maybe Venice?

Can’t help you with an outfitter but you get BWT, redfish and specked trout on the Texas gulf coast.  Specify, there’s some public marsh land near Olivia for the teal.   Keller Bay, Redfish Lake and Matagorda Bay for the fish.

Don't shoot the big white cranes.

Found some drone footage of the area.  Haven't been there in a few decades but it hasn't changed much:

If it were me, I would go to the Keys as I like that area of the country more than the gulf coast states.  I think the answer may lie more in what state you would like to be in and whether you which half (cast or blast) is more important as you might have to make a choice to go to an area with better one vs the other.

This is a hunting buddy of ours, today, down in SanAnt. He's been crushing the birds this season. He's chasing reds and crappie also.
