Fishing Flathead Lake July 2021
« on: December 31, 2020, 05:04:51 PM »
As the title says am looking at fishing Flathead lake late July around Lakeside Montana. Have a place booked to go explore the area and would like to take my kids on the lake one day and am wondering what to expect for types of fish. Anybody have some insight?

Thanks

I can't tell you where to fish, but I can tell you where not to fish.  There is a trolling run, pre depth finder and gps age, where the bottom came up quickly to a ridge and then back down.  There happened to be several old spring mattresses suspended off the bottom right on the ridge, no fabric, just the coils.  One could scuba dive there for an hour and never have to buy lures for the rest of his life.  I don't know how the mattresses got there and was smart enough to not ask.

I fished a ton during summer vacations there and didn't do well, but I grew up fishing the Missouri so the techniques didn't exactly transfer.  I do know guys used to do very well on nice sized lakers, but they kept the knowledge very tight.  If I went back on vacation, I would probably get there a day early and charter a trip and then be set up for the week on my own.

Perch are a plenty off the docks like any lake.

Did a charter there about twenty years ago and we used down riggers.  Caught some nice fish up to about 8-9lbs.  My guess there are some huge ones to be had.

Thanks guys, I will be looking for a guide for a one day trip and maybe some bank/dock fishing to fill in. We are already looking into local attractions and places to explore so will be nice to sit in a boat for a few hours and relax, plus not have to worry about running the boat hahaha  :)
