Powder question for 209 primers

So I will be installing my 209 conversion kit on my night bighorn to shoot FPJ 209 primers. I ordered it awhile back and have just recently thought, will I still be able to shoot loose powder? Someone told me I should Switch to pellets now due to the kit. I hadn’t heard that. I typically shoot 100-110 grains 777 fffg. Will the new conversion kit have any impact on loose power loads?

I had an adaptor nipple that used LRP for my side lock Hawkins. It worked great with 110gr of fffG, at the time it was not legal in WA. So I don't think it would be a problem, I don't use in-lines only side locks.

Shoot loose ! I use blackhorn and it’s great

I'm not a fan of pellets.  Shoot loose.  Blackhorn 209 is my favorite for WA.  But you'll be fine with your fffg powder still.

I use loose blackhorn in a knight and it works great.  Before that I used 777 loose in a traditions with 209 and it worked great.

I really would stay with the T7-2F in the Big Horn, actually I would suggest staying with #11 MAG Caps or RWS Dynamit Nobel 1075+ caps instead of the 209 ignition setup.  The Knight percussion guns are not a good mix with BH 209.  BH is such a slow burning powder it can cause the hammer to be pushed back ejecting the FPJ off the BP and allowing an abnormal amount of pressure to escape from the breech. Shooting caps works great without the formation of a 'crud ring' in the bottom of the bore.

Even with 110 grains and a heavier projectile you could force the hammer back.


In my Knight percussion guns I shoot 120 r. T7-2f with a Lehigh .452x265CF-HP and a DN 1075+ cap for hunting.

With a DISC and if you are in Washington - same bullet with a MMP HPH-24 sabot and 120 grs (vol) BH209 with a Lehigh Bare Primer setup shooting a Winchester W209 primer.  I use this setup for regular rifle season.

Agree with sabot on bighorn.. I shoot disc with 2f and the red fpj..  There seems to be some blowback although extremely minimual and is contained in the jacket but not sure I would use on a bighorn.. Remember reading since 2f is slightly slower burning powder it would be less prone to bumping the bullet off the charge and have no problems with 115 grain loose.. Never felt the need for BH 209 but again never used it..heard to many stories about how it was harder to ignite but who knows.. Oh yea and im shooting the win 209 Muzzy primers

Like Sabot said I don't shoot a Bighorn but TC Black Diamond. I do not use 209 ignition, I use Dynamit Nobel 1075's and T7 fffg and never had a problem so why changing now!  I don't like pellets they might be easier but loose always goes off and you can get a load dialed better with loose. Having said all that and to answer your question? yes you can shoot loose with 209 and I'm sure it works for most but I have never had a mis fire with loose but I have had one with pellets back when they were new and chit canned them.
