Youth Tag 'Cactus' Mule Deer Buck
« on: April 24, 2021, 10:03:08 AM »
Recent completion and pretty unique. Youth 'any buck' WA east side special-tag holder connected with this 'cactus' buck. Rare and unique the father of the tag holder, a client and friend, called me and asked "should we mount this?". After jokingly advising you should never ask a taxidermist this question...but yes he should as the chances of getting another one of these bucks is extremely rare. The abnormal antlers develop due to either a hormonal issue or secondary to damage/injury to the reproductive system. The velvet rarely ever sheds and most of these type of bucks rarely loose their headgear. Like any other velvet bucks, special treatment is done to retain the velvet, which this buck still had active blood flow through it. Huge bases and countless stickers makes for a tremendous trophy and even better memories for this young hunter and father team. Congrats on the buck and thank you for the work.

I love those.  Very nice work.  I've always wondered why these bucks don't rub the velvet off.  Do they even try?
Look man, some times you just gotta roll the dice

How much did the velvet/antlers shrink out of curiosity?
Very little. There’s always some shrinkage with velvet, and any antlers for that matter, but it’s extremely little if done correctly.
