Tax on a new truck in OR

Anyone know exactly what tax rate you are charged? Is it just WA sales tax or do you also get charged the local tax for your specific address?

You get charged on the tax rate where you live if you import from another state.

If you buy in Washington, you pay the tax rate at the point of sale

So for me living in Stevens County,  I pay less taxes on an Oregon or Idaho vehicle than if I went to Spokane and bought.

I bought my truck from a dealer out of state and they estimated what the taxes and fees were to register where I live. However they may not know about regional taxes/fees (RTA in my case) so I had to cut another $700 check once my registration came in.

I learned this by accident, but I guarantee you I will never buy another vehicle in Washington.  My wife went to visit family out of state and ended buying a new vehicle.  She drove back to WA with the temp tag awaiting paperwork.  Long story short, the dealership screwed up the paperwork so we ended up exchanging papers via mail for about 45 days until it got straightened out.  Then COVID hit and it was near impossible to get to the DMV.  Our thirty day tag expired and we went something like 110 days before registering.  Fully expecting to have to pony up about 9K in taxes on the vehicle I was more than a little shocked when they told me that since my vehicle was registered out of state for more than 90 days I didn't owe any taxes. 

I talked to a buddy of mine about the potential fines if caught running on an expired out of state temp tag, and was told it was max a 200 dollar fine and no points.  Consequently I will never buy a WA vehicle and pay taxes on it.

But you say registered out of state for 90 days- who/where was it registered? Was it put in a family members address?

He said it was on an out of state temp that went 110 before able to register. Since it was past 90 days from being purchased out of state he didn't have to pay tax. $200 fine for running expired temp if caught vs $9k in tax.

You missed a key point from my first post..."my wife" bought a car.

Well, sounds like you should have put the $9k in your pocket and not mentioned anything!  That would buy a good hunt, rifle, fishing gear.......

Pretty sure that someone has made a mistake. Registering a new vehicle in Washington State where the purchaser has not paid sales tax in another state requires the payment of a use tax.

Use tax is due if:

Goods are purchased in another state that does not have a sales tax or a state with a sales tax lower than Washington’s. For example, items you purchase in Oregon that are used in Washington are subject to use tax.

Use tax is determined on the value of the goods when first used in Washington. Generally, this is the purchase price.

The use tax rate is the same as your sales tax rate.

Well it might be worth a try but doubt if I’d get away with that up here in snoho county.  I’d probably get taxed and pay a fine also.
