Chummin with the shad
« on: May 14, 2021, 06:34:08 PM »
Seriously! Finally got back into a big boat and decided to keep some shad from next month for halibut baits. Been watching alot of tuna videos, and found a few with fellas chumming a school up while jigging with darts. They were using cut chunks of frozen herring. Got me thinking how much easier that is than the logistics and cost of chovies. Which now got me thinking of free shad cut up to hold fish. Any thoughts from tuna folks?

Never fished for Tuna, but I don’t see why that wouldn’t work if you were on the school.

If you have a fish hold with a mascerator pump, you can let herring, shad, chovies, etc... in some water sloshing around and when you need to chim, hit that mascerator pump and it will send a cloud of scales out into the water that will keep fish around like crazy.

Interesting. I wondered why I'd need that pump

I did that frequently fishing salmon out of Sitka. Worked like a charm sending clouds of silver and king scales into the water.
