Hood Canal shrimp in a drift boat?

Tell me I’m crazy. I’ve been thinking about the shrimp dates coming up. My only boat right now is my 18 foot clackamax with a 8 horse kicker. Am I crazy too think I could run out and drop some shrimp pots with the drifter?

You're only crazy if the wind is blowing and against the tide and all the other boat traffic doesn't make it sloppy out there.

That said I've seen 4 adult men in a 10 foot livingston out "shrimping". I've also escorted a drift boat back to the dock that got caught out there without enough horsepower to get back to the dock bucking current and wind.

20 years ago I saw a drift boat at B-10 trolling w/down riggers. They made it the whole day and it was not flat. Watch the weather, should be fine. I’d be more concerned about someone’s wake than weather.

Plenty of spots you can shrimp from 100 feet to 100yds off the shore.  You could launch at Potlach and.....oh sorry the tribe shut that previous state public launch down to non tribal.  You could launch at Misery or Pleasant Harbor and shrimp in minutes.  Watch weather report for south E or W winds. The big bend was loaded with shrimp last year, short run from Tahuya, Tawanoh or Alderbrook.

People take kayaks out on the sound all the time. A drift boat will be fine. Be sure to wash it when you get home tho. Saltwater is way tougher than fresh. Just out of curiosity where do you normally take a 18ft drift boat? Even a 16fter seems big for a drift boat.

I caught many, many shrimp out of a 12' smokercraft with a 15 hp motor.  You need to pick your days and spots, but it's no big deal at all.

Yeah, young man's world there.  I did it for 15 years, 4 pots up and down every year, race for time.  Now, I'll hit up Skillet before I pull a shrimp rope by hand ever again.

can you re-phrase what you said? I don't quite understand. Ya, Tacoma pwr owned it. Old news, tribe got it ya, been closed since covid but the tribe uses it all the time. Been gone the last two weeks bear hunting in Oregon so I hope they opened it.

The launch is open on days that are open to the public for shrimping. They open the gate at 6am on those days.

When Tacoma Power had to renew the licensing for the Cushman hydro project in about 2009 or 2010, part of the agreement with the Skok tribe was to turn the launch over to the tribe. They also gave them the park. Installed and run the fish hatchery at the launch, put a fish collection facility on the lake, and I believe gave them many millions of dollars to boot. Dont remember for sure but for some reason 23 million dollars comes to mind. But that may be the total cost of the agreement.

Was this out in front of Seal Rock or over in Jackson cove.

I remember seeing 3 or 4 Big guys in a boat like that for a few years. They had their pots on the bow and would motor out with the bow a few inches lower in than the stern. Always hoped they would make it back. Havent seen them for 3 or 4 years.

Back on track here. You could also easily launch and shrimp at Whitney Point, but its a zoo and you would want to be there really early. I guess most launches are crazy on shrimp days. At Whitney you could run out from the ramp just a few hundred yards and get shrimp. Plus it tends to be a little bit more protected from the wind so not usually as rough. It can get really nasty though. You just need to know your limits.

Or you can get a pulley from Scotty that fits your pole holder. They work really well.
