Shed Hunting With A Dog
« on: June 13, 2021, 10:11:08 PM »
I have never once come across a shed. I did once come across a nice 6x6 dead head that I turned over to WDFW once. Anyway….I was in Bass Pro and saw they have shed hunting scent for training dogs. Is this stuff a joke, a waste? Or is it good for training?

I do a lot of training in the back yard, some times I use the scent sometimes I don’t. He finds it regardless but I don’t think it hurts. I think it’s better when they are young to get them a bit more scent and excitement. Weather it’s the exact same smell I’m not sure.

Are you using a shed without additional scent as well?

I have never used scent.
The biggest thing would be ‘general’ scent training, then add sheds, but that is not set in stone.
Best to use a shed that has not been contaminated with too much human scent if you can.
‘Usually’ both sheds will be within a few hundred feet of each other, but one ‘may’ get carried off by a critter. Some get chewed on more than others for some reason.
I might be able to provide a shed if you do not have one to train with.
Cuterebra are NOT cute!
