This buck has been fighting

I got these pics in an email. I don't know the story but maybe someone else can fill us in. That looks like it had to hurt.

Sure don't take long for things to fly around the net..Some say it is an injury (another rack) and some have said that it looks like an abnormal drop tine with velvet still on it.

To me it looks like an abnormal drop tine growing under the skin and out the face.  I've seen a few deer that this has happened to.  That blood at the bottom looks like old velvet and dried blood.  It doesn't look like an antler off another deer. 

The reason I say this is because that mass at the end with the blood on it looks completely smooth.  Tines and droptines are smooth.  It doesn't have the little bumps like on the base of antlers around the brow tine area. 

The only way another antler could be that smooth is if it broke off way above the brow tine.  As all you know antlers do not bleed, velvet does. 

Some have said it looks like part of the skull plate attached to the abnormal antler.  If it was than where is the brow tine?  Where is the bumpy characteristics that should be present at the base of the antler around the brow tine.

oh boy, At least buck is in peace from suffer, here the same thing as Elk in our back yard. We have seen him coming in and out many times. Here unicorn bull. Pic was taken in May 07.

Looks more like it could be a fight. Just because the antler is growng backwards if it's a growth.

I agree on the drop tine.  If it was a fight, that is the bravest little three point I have ever seen to tangle with that bad boy.

It's deffinatly not a fight!  Those are just some crazy kickers coming off that drop tine.  Blow the picture up and look close to the end where it is supposedly "broke off".  It's smooth!  That is blood from shedding velvet.  Antlers don't bleed when they break.  Also if you look close at the side of the head you will see where it goes under the skin.
