Wormy bear meat??
« on: August 01, 2021, 12:50:46 PM »
Hunting bear Eastern Washington. Has any ever heard of bear meat being "wormy" due to the excessive heat in August? Friend keep bringing this up and I've never heard of such a issue. I see it might go bad if you don't get it cooled down.
TIA

I had a bear that had worms in and around the fat on the bears rump....specifically around the anis.  Cut the fat off and move on, not that big a deal.

Sounds like a fear factor challenge  :chuckle:

All bears carry trichinosis, a type of parasite. Needs to be cooked well done, or at least 148* I believe. That being said they could also carry rounds or tapes internally.

Most if not all bears have worms.

Thanks, what everybody commented was what I was thinking. Between intestinal worms or worms in the fat. Thanks for your input

As far as worms you can see. Of 8 or so bears I have felt with none he worms. However basically every deer and elk has. Also temp would have nothing to do with this.

Never eat Bear meat unless it reaches 160 degrees in the middle of a steak, burger or summer sausage or any meat from that animal. Otherwise the meat is not safe.

Tonasket, I think your friend is making stuff up. I'm not aware of any parasite that would be more prevalent due to hot weather.  :twocents:

Just pressure can your bear meat.....90 minutes under pressure will kill everything and it is just down right delicious.

I've butchered, or helped, at least a dozen Spring and Fall bears, I've never seen a worm. We've always done gutless though so haven't looked into any guts either.

None of mine have ever had any. My buddy sent me a pic of one he killed that was infested with them. He offered me some sausage and I passed it was sketch and he is not known for eating well cooked meat. Cook the heck out of it 160 or better, over done beats parasites in my book!
