Close call....Update last night
« on: August 29, 2021, 05:40:48 PM »
This doe has been around here for about five years. She stays mostly on land to the south and comes up this way in the evening to get some greens from my lawn and shrubs. She spends the winter here getting my handouts.
Looks to me that she barley missed getting taken down by a cat. This was about 3 weeks ago. She has since disappeared and her orphan fawns are living here now. Neighbor to the south has a trail cam on a spring up the hill a couple hundred yds above his house on Bissell Rd. He has pics of several cats including the collared tom that jrebel has on his cam up by Clark Lake....3 miles away.Neighbors cam is about 1/3 of a mile from my place. The deer herd around here is taking a beating..both whitetail and mulies. Sad deal...I have five orphan fawns around the place right now.

Thanks for sharing. Those pictures provide a lot if detail. It makes me think it was the cats left Paw trying to get a grip on the hind end of the deer. Sounds like the cat kept tabs on her and finished the job?

As of this morning one of her orphan fawns is missing. I think once the predators wipe out our local herd they will have to look for "other" prey.

Perhaps the cats won't be to difficult  to call in... time to complete the circle?
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

Found this this morning out behind my wood shed. This doe had a broken back foot but was getting around and eating. she leaves two orphans. Checked the body and the only thing I can find is scratch marks on the neck and the neck seems broken. happened last night after 10 pm. I'll have to haul the body away so whatever killed her moves on.......................................................

Darn. Weird though because wouldn't you expect the predator to drag it away? Taking a big bite and leaving seems odd but maybe it was scared off by activity from your house or sounds who knows. Shame either way

Sounds like a field trip by your place with the rifle once Cougar opens up might be in order.

That seems like a golden opportunity to ambush a cougar. It was likely coming back for it and the season opens soon.

Nature sucks sometimes. Leave the carcass, kill the cougar.
