Quad for 13 yo?
« on: October 31, 2021, 01:18:23 PM »
I have never owned or even have ridden a quad so I'm hoping to get some recommendations. My daughter has been wanting to get a quad to ride around our place and I am thinking of purchasing a used one for her. I just have no idea what size to be looking at.  And something she won't grow out of too quick. Brand doesn't matter too much right now but I am looking for something four-wheel drive and can be used also for working around our place pulling trailers and general work.

So what should I be looking for/at? What price ranges are reasonable for a decent shape one?

Also if anyone has one at a reasonable price let me know.

Thanks
Tony

Im still running a 2004 450 Foreman that has never been to the shop.  Buddy has same vintage 350s x2.  Have friends with same vintage Polaris and they are junk by comparison.  Arctic Cats are decent and I would have one if I couldnt have a Honda or Yamaha.

For your daughter, 350+, more on the plus for farm work.    :twocents:

Having gone cheap several times, I strongly recommend NOT going cheap. Get a decent used unit in the 250-500cc range. (Gears can make up for lots of power, unless she's looking to race around!) You're probably looking at $1500-3k, and that's shopping carefully.

Used prices are super high right now.  I bought a 2005 500cc Honda (or 2006, I forget) three years ago and paid $3200 with less than 500 miles on it.  the same quad right now with a ton more miles is selling in the $4500 dollar range due to low inventory and high prices of new ones.

I will agree with what has already been said....don't by cheap off brands, you will regret it.  Honda, Yamaha, can-am, suzuki, etc....name brands are the only way to go.  My son is 12 and he handles the 500 cc just fine.  I would not go smaller than a 350, though I have been on many Honda 2wd 250's that have plenty of low end grunt to move my fat butt around without a problem.   :chuckle: :chuckle:  They are just super small and most will outgrow them super fast.

Good luck finding a good machine at a reasonable price.   If you see one, run....and I mean RUNNNNN... as fast as you can to buy it.  It won't last long.
