What are the REAL numbers!!!!!!
« on: March 31, 2022, 05:57:51 AM »
I'm just screwing around on my phone.
With the spring bear closing, science based wildlife management.
I was just thinking does most hunters know the numbers.
Where we are are at in terms of harvest.
I wish 2021 numbers would hit,so I can add that.
WDFW you have to go to trends,3 year management plan ,and they only show graphs that they want the Commission to see.
Anyway interpret anyway you like.
I may go ahead and do Elk ,cougar, and some other statewide species.
Just thought some hunters may want to see numbers in terms that we can understand and read.

Here is cougar harvest totals.
Some reason no data for 2013 or 2014.
Seems are cougar harvest is up compared to prior years and hangs steady at about 300 a year.

Some variables in there ,bear getting two tags,2020 year of the covid, and 2015 being a rockstar year for deer and elk.

wasn't turkey season closed for the opener in 2020? I would think the numbers would be way lower for that year. can't remember how long it was closed but thought it was over a month

My issue with stats is they can be, and frequently are, twisted to fit the narrative.  Need all the angles to see the big picture.
Economy failure = Too many people spending money they don't have on things they don't need to impress people they don't like.

I agree there any many variables and aspects involed,
Male/female harvest,permit numbers,regulation changes,
"Climate change"  ,drought, bad winters,disease/ bluetonge/hoof rot...then human variable number of hunter/covid/gas prices/just things that pop up that cause human behavior change.

I just wanted to make these charts ,with general totals for species for each year.

Such as deer totals I would make charts for mule deer vs whitetail vs blacktail but that don't show each species just female or male.

Wonder what the harvest rates for Mulies was like before the state adopted the 3 point minimum for all east side GMU's in 1997.  I believe it was in response to the severe winter kills we had in 94, 95 and 96.

One does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted. If one were to present the sportsman with the death of the animal as a gift he would refuse it. What he is after is having to win it, to conquer the surly brute through his own effort and skill with all the extras that this carries with it: the immersion in the countryside, the healthfulness of the exercise, the distraction from his job. ~ Jose Ortega y Gasset

That's kinda the reason I did these charts, seems every year they add a year and dump a year on .
Or something cause they only show data back to 2013 now.
So it would be nice to see a a lot farther back trends.

I've tried digging through the WDFW website for stuff prior to 2000 and it's just not there.  I got a hold of the WDFW for a records request last year and they told me to try the state archives.  When I did that they sent me to another entity that didn't have the info either.  Frustrating to say the least.

Do you have populations? I’ve heard bear populations around 30k and only 2k killed a year? Plenty for spring hunt without hurting them just hurt leaf lickers feelings. 2015 I killed my last elk
I have Man Chit to do
