Toutle elk permits, any public land?
« on: May 16, 2022, 05:13:30 AM »
I was helping a buddy fill out his applications and he was asking about the toutle, he isn’t after a big bull, just any bull. My question, is there any public land to hunt that tag, or are the elk on private or warehouser land? If so, are all the warehouser permits gone?

There is a mainline from the town of Toutle that cuts though weyco and goes to the state patch.  This state patch is where the 3000 road is, basically runs along the ridge between the forks of the river and goes up to the blast zone area.

Does he need the permit to have a decent hunt?  It sounds like getting a permit is a chit show, I never bought one.

If he's a seasoned elk hunter he'll do fine on the DNR land.

4100 mainline, last mile before the bridge upstream, all land north of the river is state land. You'd need to check gmu boundaries.

If he’s a new hunter with zero elk points, he probably doesn’t need to worry about hunting Toutle. Spending too much time thinking about it is akin to talking about how you’re going to spend your lottery winning when you buy a ticket. Lol.

That said, I would suggest you both buy/subscribe to onX or something similar to help e-scout and find public property in whatever unit you/he hunts.

This year there is the slightest chance that the draw results will be out before you have to buy the key. If a person does get lucky and draw it, I would definitely be asking around to find people with the key that might be willing to take you in as their two day guest. If a person gets lucky enough to draw, I wouldn’t want to be limited.

If for some reason he has a ton of elk points I would say buy the key just in case. If he has none, that would be like putting a deposit on a car when you buy your lottery ticket in preparation for winning- probably a low odds investment.

It's pretty split. I has the Toutle tag last year without Weyerhauser pass and was able to get a nice bull down on public land. I would recommend buying a walk on permit, those are easy to get and there are a couple gates that no motorized vehicles are allowed past. Those are great hunts.

One does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted. If one were to present the sportsman with the death of the animal as a gift he would refuse it. What he is after is having to win it, to conquer the surly brute through his own effort and skill with all the extras that this carries with it: the immersion in the countryside, the healthfulness of the exercise, the distraction from his job. ~ Jose Ortega y Gasset

get onx. turn on the public land filter. turn on the private land filter. most of the toudal is going to be wearhouser. if a guy wanted to kill a nice bull he would need the permit or be ready to hike alitle ways

There’s plenty of state land in the toutle to kill a bull. OnX will show you the boundaries. You don’t NEED the Weyco pass. Would it help? Sure but it’s not a requirement.

Saw a few nice bulls on public last year. He shouldn’t have an issue filling a tag if he sticks with it on state land.

Weyerhaeuser considers them motorized and you need their $350 permit.

You can ride the ebikes on the motorized section of the tree farm but they are not allowed in the walk-in areas. You have to use a pedal bike then.

There used to be public access on the south side by the intersection of the 81 FS rd and the Cougar Rd (503?), on the west side of 81 going north. Not sure of that section's status now.

If he wants to huntweyerhauser he will have to buy a permit they don’t do anything for tag holders , also lots of bulls on public too

Yes, I understand that. I’m just saying I hope he gets one in the mayhem. I need one, too. Wish us luck!
