Sockeye in the Skagit What to Use?
«
on:
June 10, 2022, 09:49:09 AM »
As the title says, they are going to open the Skagit for Sockeye. Curious what is good to use from the bank to catch them. For just about everything else have had luck with pink/pearl Dicknite, but not sure if they will even bite in the river?? Are they like the lakes and it is an early morning bite and then nothing? Don't need a spot to go just asking about gear.
Thanks

Fish like you're fishing for humpies, pink wingbobber, Sandshrimp, pink hoochies work too. They run close to shore. Be prepared for river to be high the whole season. Might need big weight.

3 way to some sort of small hoochie or a few beads with flash over it and a smaller spin and glow (4-6) above it. Pink/red. Sandshrimp with scent over the top if you like.
They run right along the shore much of the time, if you haven't river fished them you would be surprised how close to your feet they are.
Be careful, lots of surprising drop offs when the water is high.

We used to use a red, white, and blue bucktail fly when I lived on Kodiak. Used about a 1/2 oz. of lead below it, they worked well. Used the same thing for silvers, and steelhead too. There was a name for them, but I don't recall what it was at the moment. The hairs were around 2" long, and made of plastic.

How do you measure trying, you do, or you don’t.

It’s completely muddy right now, and more rain in the forecast.🤯

You can always do the Kenai flip, doesn't matter if the water is clear or not...

Small, as in tiny, pink/red/white jig under a bobber or free drifted/ bounced if they are shallow
