Hooah! Two great historical events on the same day. This We'll Defend! After Lexington & Concord and then the capture of Fort Ticonderoga, General Washington saw the need for standardized training and chain of command to bring our scattered volunteer militias together. He petitioned the Continental Congress and they created the US Army on June 14th, 1775.Also on this day, but in 1777, the Continental Congress accepted the 13 stars and 13 stripes as the national standard. After the birth of our nation, new stars and stripes were added as new states were added. In 1818, Congress voted to keep the original 13 stripes and add new stars for new states. Betsy Ross supposedly sewed the first flag. This attribution has no historical confirmation, one way or another. But whoever created it, it is beautiful. Let it continue to fly over us for a long, long time.
