On this day in 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait and Saddam Hussein declared it as part of Iraq, gaining 20% of the world's oil reserves. The invasion was quick and met little resistance. A coalition of opposition formed immediately. One week later, Operation Desert Shield commenced and the US and other countries started amassing 700,000 troops in Saudi Arabia on the Iraqi border. Six months later, Operation Desert Storm commenced with air strikes, commonly referred to as shock and awe. The ground war commenced a month later and it took the coalition only 4 days to rout the troops from Iraq. The Iraqi troops set fire to the Kuwaiti oil fields on their way out, creating one of the largest ecological catastrophes in the history of civilization. George Bush declared a cease fire on April 3rd, stopping short of invading Iraq, after the coalition inflicted 100,000 casualties on Saddam's forces. 148 US forces were killed in the war.
