Meat Slicer Opinions - Please
« on: August 09, 2022, 05:25:52 PM »
I've been reading reviews on several models and the opinions vary greatly. I do all my own game meat cutting and have always done above average when it comes to cutting steaks by hand on larger elk and moose pieces. I'm going to be thinly slicing large amounts of Bologna / salami and maybe even some bacons. I figured if I'm getting one, I would use it for the larger steak muscles as well. What brand (model) do you like, why and where did you get it? Also, which ones would you avoid? Your knowledge and tips would greatly be appreciated!      Thanks!      Joe

I've got a 12", 1/3 HP Globe that I picked up used from a catering company going out of business.  This thing is awesome.  Very heavy, I'd guess 80+ lbs.  Does everything I need, sausages, cheeses, bacon, etc.  I'd go with a 12" vs 10".  Gives you a bit more versatility. Go heavy and sturdy too if you are real serious.
Look man, some times you just gotta roll the dice

I was going to buy an Avantco SL310 but was able to find a larger different brand used on Craigslist and went that route.  I would not go any smaller than the 310, certainly not any of the consumer grade ones out there.

The thing to keep in mind is they are a bit of a pain to clean so I don't find myself using it as much as I thought I might.  You have to disassemble it and the main portion can't go in the sink so it takes some time to clean it, dry it and get it all put back together.

For ultra thin charcuterie you really can't do it any other way.  It's also great for making lunchmeat out of roasts or whole hams and turkey breast.

I don't get a ton of use, but when I do pull it out there is really no other tool that will do the job.

I would look used, seems like plenty of people buy them and they collect dust which is how I got mine.

I am interested in this also.  I have been doing my own bacon and my current slicer doesn't have enough throw on the tray to do standard length bacon cuts.  So I cut them in half sizes.  Which isn't terrible and they actually fit in the frying pan better.
