first turkeys hit the dirt!!
« on: May 18, 2009, 12:37:13 PM »
Went over to the spokane area on friday night and had a couple days of great turkey hunting. First day started really slow with only 2 gobbles coming from a distant ridge. Made our way up to where we thought we were close and set up. Made a couple calls and 4 hens started coming right for us. They were coming on the other side of a brush pile and worked right past us at about 15 yards. Then I spot a big red head heading right our way. He was coming right to the hens and stopped in the wide open area at 20 yards. My buddy harvested his first bird and a great trophy!

We had a big ranch to hunt but hadnt talked to the farmer until that evening. He told us where he thought the turkeys were roosting and where they liked to hang out. The hunt was on the next morning. So at around 4 am we walked out a ridge that over looks where the landowner told us where to go. I let out a little call and the woods errupted with gobbles in every direction. We headed down to a flat and set up a decoy and waited for them to come down. With gobbles in every direction for 2 hours we started contemplating moving closer when we spotted some hens. They came past at about 30 yards and right behind them was a big gobbler in full strut. He stayed this way right around the decoy. I slowly raised up and had my first turkey. He slightly raised his head but was in full display when i shot. We went back out after lunch and still had turkeys gobbling everywhere. Called a jake in to about 10 yards but let him grow another year!! He stopped and looked right at me and then went back to courting the decoy!! What a great weekend spent in the woods hunting and spending time with friends.  Cant wait for next weekend. Taking my girlfriend back over to see if she can bag her first...ill post pics in a bit!!

Hogsniper,
Great story..Get those pictures up, I can't wait to see them. I had forgotten how much I like hunting in the spring and now that I have had a little success of my own, I can't get enough of these birds.

Went out two days and didnt find much. Set up where I thought would be a good spot and waited til daylight. Well as the light came we were close...too close. A big ol tom was straight above us. We set up on under this brush pile that was at the base of a big tree and the gobbling started for about an hour. What an awesome time. I never did call, thinking he would definantly look right down at us but he flew out and out of sight to never be seen again...Good times tho. Did see tons of game tho. Saw 3 bears, 3 elk, 5 moose, and lots of turkeys...

Congrat's on a fantastic hunt, and on the bonus of seeing the other wildlife.  Those are great pictures.  John
