357-38 Special
« on: May 18, 2009, 08:42:33 PM »
I have never reloaded 357-38special ammo yet and was hoping for some good advice. If that can't be found i'll try any old advice.  Teacherman just traded off my sks for a taurus 357 Brazilian model double action revolver.  What would you recomend for a good 357 can gun.  Can i reload 38 special with the same die?  if so what is a good 38 special load. :guns: :hunter: :mgun: :mgun2: :hunt2:
I've slowed down enough in my old age to finally let the game catch up to me

38 / 357 is real easy to reload.

Follow the receipe in the reloading book of your choice.  Don't think it is a good idea to trust anyone as to the "perfect load".   :bdid:  Twice now I have tried it, and both times got very lucky.  One time action seized (ruger rifle, .270 Win. guy who was picking the load should have known better and gave me a .270 weatherby load... :yike:)  Second guy gave me a VERY HOT  >:( load for a .44 special to try.  Primer poper.  Both guys are reliable and should have known better.

Personally I like shooting lead loads in the .38; because it is cheaper.

An enjoyable .38/357 would be either a Ruger Blackhawk (single action) or S&W 27 (double action).  Personal favorite is a S&W 66 / 19 size, but I have real small hands.

God Bless,

With the 357 and the Taurus start low. Ive had taurus's that locked up and shot the same rounds thru my Rugers. they have an awesome warrenty service at least.

But dont trust anyone's. Get a book and start at the lowest...
I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me to.

Yes you can use the same die for both.

I would not use 38 brass only because of the fouling issue.  You can load 357 brass with the same reduced loads and not have to scrub like crazy in your cylinder.  Just use a slower powder so more of the case capacity is used up.  Too much case free/air capacity with a fast powder is very dangerous.  Use good HC or plated and fouling will be minimal.  Full lead even wadcutter reduced loads foul too much.  Get carbide dies.

What would you recomend for a good 357 can gun.

Ruger GP100, 4" stainless... built like a tank and very reliable.
