Glad you got an elk.  Maybe there's more to the story, but from what you said the animal was very close with it's head up but mortally wounded.  It doesn't sound like it was going anywhere.  I would urge you to finish the job next time and tend to the carcass accordingly.  Sounds like the animal possibly suffered a slow and painful death and was possibly scavenged on by birds and coyotes while still alive.  Also, the meat would have been much better if you had done so.  :twocents:

Great bull, amazing first elk, tough way for him to go though.  Since you've got orange on I assume rifle season? No reason not to keep shooting until the animal is expired.  Get it over for them ASAP.  Lesson learned though.

Was able to fill a late cow tag. Kind of  torn on shooting a cow this time of year but the herd in this area is beyond healthy. Terrible photo I know.

Actually a 2023 central Oregon elk, taken with a depredation tag. Pleased with the shot, 405 yards through the heart with my 30-06 Remington 700. Ammo was handloaded 178 grain Hornady ELD-X at 2790 fps via Ramshot Hunter. Smashed her leg/elbow before penetrating the heart. Didn't recover the bullet. Have only cooked one tenderloin so far, and my goodness it was excellent!  :)  Glad I had two strong and much younger guys with me for the pack out! We boned her out on the spot, put the meat in our packs and hiked about a mile to the road.

Regards, Guy

Forgot to post this. My first elk, 2022 in Montana. One of the coldest hunts I've done with highs in the mid to low teens and lows into the negatives at night.

Way to get it done!

Nice work! Thank you for your service birddogdad! We appreciate you!!

Thank you! have been in WA since late 90's hunted elk in "any" areas initially until they changed rules several years back. This prompted me to focus on actually working for elk, cows were easy and i am more a meat hunter than trophy (though i wont pass on a stud for sure). Have focused on bulls in public lands, have not hunted private or pay to play areas (including paper) and have harvested branch bulls in 2012, 14,15,16,17,18 and back on board this season. I feel blessed to actually run into these encounters but i do put boots to ground and walk my butt off. Enough time in the areas and you know where to run and gun from history. I know my average is high compared to most but i really feel that lots of luck is involved, though year after year some may say otherwise...

B

So you have killed 6 bulls in 11 years, if your counting from 2012.  Your not 6-9 your 6-11.  Just going off your years you listed.  :dunno:
Their going down!!!
