New hunter, where to go? (snohomish county)
« on: October 01, 2022, 11:20:37 PM »
Hey guys!!
Im a new hunter and got all the right gear, ammo and rifle. Im going for black tail, and if nothing, then Elk in Nov. What are some decent areas to try this year? Last year I tried around duvall but didn't see a single deer, that year got kinda wasted 😄😏.... don't have any friends or family that hunt, had to teach myself to use a gun, youtubed how to hunt... just want to set myself up for a little more success this year.

Willing to drive within 2 hours from Sultan. Also willing to pay $100 for land use. Thanks in advanced!!! Any and all tips/tricks/advice is appreciated!!!

I don’t live over there anymore, but when I hunted that area I would just head up into the state land or national forest and get up high and glass cuts. Also slow stalk thru timber. If you can try to set a game cam, lockable is best. Mind the thermals; hike uphill in morning before light, get high and glass. Hike downhill later in morning always nose into the wind. If you stay closer to home, and spend more time getting to know a local deer hideout, you’ll save gas money and time. Black tail are all over but they live in some thick stuff. Good luck!

on top of other advice you get here, there are a couple real good books (that i know of) with lots of good information on blacktails

1. Scott Haugen's Trophy Blacktails: The Science Of The Hunt
and 2. Boyd Iverson's Blacktail Trophy Tactics

both real good books worth a read

Don’t discourage yourself. Find open areas to glass. They are there, they just have the advantage of thick cover.
