elk unit info
« on: May 26, 2009, 10:33:14 PM »
Hey guys looking for a good unit to get in deep on foot on the westside for elk.
I'll be hunting archery and am not against burning up some boot soles. I am looking
to hunt early in the rut. I will only have 7 days to hunt prior to leaving for my goat
hunt in Alaska so I am looking for the best unit I can find. I am doing some scouting around
Sainthelens later this summer but would like to hunt around I-90 so let me know what you think.
work hard and reap the reward or dont and get left behind!!!

You may regret posting that, probably gona get the same answer as every one else that asks the same thing ;)

Sounds like all you need to do is go scouting and see what you find, look for good bubs and old wallows. Anything that looks like rut activity and hunt it during season, keep about 20 differeny areas in mind to check, Im sure not all will pan out come season. Big bulls on the pass  ;)

Yeah if I-90 is where you want to hunt then the Stampede Pass area would be my number 1 choice, Hansen Creek number 2.

I would say scout where you are going to hunt. If you are going to hunt around I-90 then scout that area. Those areas are two different tags east/west so it sounds like picking what side of the state you want to hunt is step 1. Then go to the wdfw and check out harvest reports in the areas you want to hunt. Then gets some maps. Then go put in the work actually hiking your potential hunting grounds looking for elk sign you will know when you are in a good spot. Good luck,it's a lot of work but will pay off if you do your homework.
If you want to make it,
you can't fake it,
you gotta live it.

thier are some bulls in stampede unit, it gets heavily hunted though due to being so close to the big cities.

Stampede does get hunted heavy but not nearly as much as during modern firearm.  Archery hunt will not be nearly as crowded.

Nothing like hunting the Stampede for 3pt minimum during archery and having a van full of "friends" with rifles take what ever they want. It's not what it used to be. The good news is that it is steep so you can get away from most of the hunters.

So What does your post count mean anyway? Lilbuff you started this pissing match and quite frankly its pretty sad.
I guess some guys just have to be smart asses to feel good about themselves and if that is how you are then so be it.
As for all the other guys thanks for the info.
By the way Lilbuff maybe you could tag along and carry my pack on my Alaska goat hunt, and keep the heater running
while I'm on stand in Saskatchewan for whitetails. Oh and if you have some free time I could use another set of eyes looking
for brown bears on the Alaska peninsula and that's just for 09. But if you to busy being a smart ass I will understand!
