What other actions should be taken to fix WDFW?
« on: March 08, 2023, 07:42:51 PM »
We are familiar with the Lona Smith suit and Spring Bear.

What other areas should be addressed in WDFW ? What are your suggestions.

For me

The building of bike trails in prime Mule deer habitat without review by WDFW being allowed by FS.
And the operation of these trails to large groups of bikers after Oct.1. And the possible ecological damage that may occur to nearby streams by thousands of Mountain Bikers in large groups. Let alone the disruption to other species.

Allowing comments on wolves or any other wildlife issue from people who do not live in Washington State.

The WDFW has no authority over land use in the NFs. We have no right to restrict the use of public lands to anyone during any time of the year.

I do feel that written in the WFWC rules/bylaws is that the Commission should adopt recommendations by the on-the-ground bios without contrary evidence. Evidence is not opinion or emotion.

Break up the monopoly in Olympia.  Regional management from within each region by regional persons who actually live in said region and voted to office.  Regional manager hires his own staff.  Public review and oversight by regional residents through county Commissioners that are also voted in.

Like your idea.
Most likely won't happen.
But I like it.

 Maybe so..

But there are plenty of places that the FS shuts down all but foot traffic in the Methow from October 1 till spring to protect wintering herds. And WDFW could ask for that if they cared in these heavy intrusive Mount Bike Trails.

We need to rid the department of wdfw employees that believe in the Wilgus bogus science. I'm not sure how that is done because getting rid of a State employee requires an act of God to do so. It is a cancer that doesn't have an obvious treatment.

Wild places staying wild.
Ya most people, including our Commission doesn't have a clue.

It reminds me about many years ago.
NF gated and mounded tons of roads.
Saying that too many roads= bad for animals
Roads from logging/switchbacks is unfair advantage/ unethical /too easy for hunters.
We need to close these down for wildlife.

Now e-bikes go right down them and animals can't even hear them coming.
But that's ok.
Now gates are cut open all the time.
SXS,ATV,e bike everybody is back there.
What's the point in a gate or tank trap.
Not much.
Some places should be walk in only.

In the Thompson Ridge area they tank trapped side roads, and built four foot wide maze of Bike trails south of the four mile marker to Twisp river. 1000s of acres of walk in hunting destroyed. I got no problem with a couple guys on bikes. But this is packs of 15-20 riders non stop every day from snow melt to snowfall.
In the Bridge Creek drainage they have always closed the side road gates Oct. 1 walk-in ,stock, or pedal . They have plans to develop the whole area with bike trails.

Given the state of Mule Deer Herds everyone and any organization involved in hunting and WDFW should be engaged and asking questions.

I wonder if the Thompson Ridge area if all those bikers could be sued for harassing the deer herds?
With all those tree huggers out there disturbing the herds during calving of the fawns, I cannot believe that there will not be a loss of fawns and calves, elk, because of the bike riders and hikers.  Hunter harassment is just not during hunting season, it is all year long!  These riders do not need to be in the valleys during the birth of the young as it will cause the mothers to abandon their young.

Doubt that can be sold. Bikers bring a lot of money into the valley. And they don’t sit in camps roasting hot dogs, they go to hotels ,bars, and shops.
The only way it could be slowed I believe is on a environmental issue.
