« on: April 04, 2023, 07:35:55 PM »
Just got a permit for motorized access to the Kaposwin Tree Farm. Where are the gates?

Thanks,

Okie John

This map should help. There used to be one outside Orting. Start getting in there before summer time cause they used to close it for fire danger. Makes an area hard to figure out when you can’t access it. Good luck

Does anyone other than me remember when this area was owned by and referred to as "Saint Regis"?
And the grumpy, old, one armed guy who was at the main gate for years it seemed.
Oh, and by the way, FREE entry, just like Weyerhaeuser and all the other private timberlands; free.

I remember hunting back there in the 70's, we came in from the ATV trails and walked in for years before they opened it up to vehicles, there used to be an old man who stayed in a old rail car, he would drive around when he heard shooting and drive you and your buck out to the gate, we would see 60 deer in a weekend and my dad would tell us how bad the hunting had got, lol.

i don't doubt one bit that he was a good guy.
Things were sure different in the early 70's; it's just so hard to believe that was 50 years ago.

And then meth humans decided that taking their rotten freezers with them while they vandalized cars and equipment was acceptable practice and presto ....change

I do.  Grew up in Orting, and my Grandparents lived in Electron.  My Grandpa used to sit the Electron gate for a number of years after he retired from logging.  We went up in there as kids all the time, up past the reload and hunted a lot without any kind of permit.  When Champion bought St. Regis out, they put up more gates, but you could get a key from the main office and return it at the end of the day.  Times sure have changed.

Gary
One does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted. If one were to present the sportsman with the death of the animal as a gift he would refuse it. What he is after is having to win it, to conquer the surly brute through his own effort and skill with all the extras that this carries with it: the immersion in the countryside, the healthfulness of the exercise, the distraction from his job. ~ Jose Ortega y Gasset
